Simpsons Team Scrambling On Movie
So, with the July 27th, 2007 release of The Simpsons Movie inching closer each day, how’s the hotly anticipated film coming? "We're still trying to figure out what the movie is about," admitted show producer James L. Brooks during a recent Television Critics Association panel discussions attended by FilmStew. A short promo of the film was shown to TV critics this past weekend, but it’s obviously still very much in development. "The writers, several of the original directors along with veteran directors and an all-star group of showrunners are all working to finish the film,” Brooks added. “Some kind of trailer will come out in February, but the normal full trailer won't debut until May.” The creative team behind the show – Brooks, creator Matt Groening and executive producer Al Jean - originally discussed doing a film way back during the third season (1991-1992). But in the end, they all agreed that their focus should be on making the television show. Then, two years ago, Brooks says they began to explore it seriously. And the animators couldn't be happier as they have this huge scope to work with on the film. "It's also really neat to be able to do a movie while the fans are still clamoring for the television series," said Groening.
At Last, The Simpsons Have It Nailed
Glenn Whipp of LA Daily News speaks to series creators Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and Al Jean as well as myself in order to piece together The Simpsons Movie."I will say this — we have things in the movie that you can't do on TV," Groening says. "There may be some nudity. It may be people you want to see naked. It may be people you don't want to see naked. But you will see things that you've never seen before." As the mind reels at Groening's minor-key revelation, it should be noted that "The Simpsons Movie" will be rated PG-13 ("we hope," Groening jokes), feature every character in Springfield's vast universe and attempt to strike a balance between Homer's slapstick stupidity and character-based comedy. "We've put out some phony stories," Brooks says. "It used to be that comedies never put their best jokes in trailers. Now, as marketing has become king, you start the trailer with your best joke. We're trying to strike a balance between the two." Adds Groening: "But don't take the pig waste disposal thing lightly. You botch that and it could really put a crimp in someone's day." Simpsons website maintainer Adam Wolf doubts the movie can "recapture the magic of the early to mid years." "The show is completely different now," Wolf says. "To return to the glory years now would be a feat nothing short of amazing, but would also pose the question as to why every show couldn't be as good as the movie." To which "Simpsons" vet Al Jean, who has been the show runner since season 13, answers: "To take people by surprise after 18 years is hard. But, the truth is, I've been dealing with that feeling since season 2. It's not new."

Groening, Brooks, Jean Talk Simpsons Movie
Not even threats of visits by Sideshow Bob or Fat Tony could wheedle many details of the upcoming "The Simpsons Movie" out of the series' powers that be. Specifics remain as closely guarded as the identity of the state in which Springfield is located. "I can't really tell you much," said director David Silverman, "other than the Simpsons will be in it. Springfield will be in it; it's not being shot in Vancouver. Very few animals were hurt in the shooting of this film … a couple." "We're doing things we never could have done on the series," said James L. Brooks. "Obviously, there's that much more manpower brought into it, and hopefully we're telling a story that requires this length." Al Jean said, "Pixar movies are so good, we want to live up to that too." Brooks hastily added with a laugh. "No, we're not going to look as good, Don't go away thinking that!" "We want to make people laugh," said "Simpsons" creator Groening. "Not that it's a role model in content, but the 'South Park' movie was proof that you could do a movie that didn't have the greatest animation but was really funny from beginning to end." READ MORE
Ratings: The Wife Aquatic
A larger-than-usual audience was exposed to The Simpsons on Sunday. With thanks to an NFL playoff lead-in, Fox achieved an average of 13.9 million viewers for the 8pm half hour which included both the remainder of the NFL post-game and episode 'The Wife Aquatic'. At 8.30, the remainder of The Simpsons and American Dad averaged 9.76 million viewers. So while figures for the night are sketchy, 13.9 million is the highest viewer count the show has received since 2005 when 'Homer & Ned's Hail Mary Pass' scored 23.1 million viewers off the back of the Super Bowl. Discounting that phenomenal record, the next highest figures date back to November 2003 when Season 15 premiere 'Treehouse Of Horror XIV' scored 16.2 million viewers. The NFL helped Fox to win its first Sunday night in quite some time. ABC and CBS came in at second and third respectively. The next new episode of The Simpsons is titled "Revenge Is A Dish Best Served 3 Times" and will air on January 28.
