Dan Castellaneta Wins An Emmy

The Creative Arts Emmy award winners were announced this week, and while The Simpsons were in contention for Outstanding Animated Series for the episode ‘Gone Maggie Gone’, it failed to bring home the goods. Instead, South Park took the award, thanks to their episode ‘Margaritaville’. It is the third time South Park have beaten The Simpsons in this category.

It wasn’t all bad news though, as Dan Castellaneta was awarded his fourth Emmy in the voice-over category for his work as Homer Simpson in ‘Father Knows Worst’. This means that contenders Harry Shearer and Hank Azaria missed out, but at least the award stayed in the Simpsons family. Congratulations Dan!

The Simpsons was also nominated in the Outstanding Musical Composition category for the music in ‘Gone Maggie Gone’, but lost to ABC series “Legend Of The Seeker”.

San Diego prepares for its upcoming staging of Ron Hutchinson’s behind-the-scenes of “Gone With The Wind” drama Moonlight and Magnolias starring Dan Castellaneta, voice of Homer Simpson. The show will perform in the Old Globe Theatre July 16-August 14. Castellaneta and director John Rando also collaborated in the same actor-director dynamic for last year’s staging of Steve Martin’s The Underpants. The new Hutchinson play recently played its New York debut at Manhattan Theatre Club’s Off-Broadway space. Moonlight and Magnolias finds its setting in 1939 Hollywood as big-time movie producer David O. Selznick (Castellaneta) shuts down production on the epic movie “Gone With the Wind” and locks himself, screenwriter Ben Hecht and director Victor Fleming in his office to rewrite the script.

Dan Speaks Out On Simpsons

Dan Castellaneta has responded to Harry Shearer’s comments about The Simpsons earlier this month. Shearer said he was unhappy with the show’s quality compared to years past. “In a nutshell, I don’t agree,” Castellaneta said. But he acknowledges the series has changed over the years. There’s slightly less running time and more characters to accommodate, Castellaneta said. “Instead of just being in the Simpson’s world, it’s expanded out to Springfield,” he said, and the reality envelope, such as it is with a family that’s bright yellow, has been pushed a bit more. “I think Harry’s issue is that the show isn’t as grounded as it was in the first three or four seasons, that it’s gotten crazy or a little more madcap. I think it organically changes to stay fresh.” The Simpsons remains funny and surprising, he said, adding: “I believe the show still breaks the mold in terms of storytelling.” Read More >>>

Homer Simpson has bagged another Emmy. Dan Castellaneta, the actor who provides the voice of the patriarch of Fox’s long-running animated comedy “The Simpsons,” has earned this year’s Primetime Emmy Award honor for voice-over performance for his work as Homer, Krusty the Clown, Grampa and others. Castellaneta won voice-over Emmys for “Simpsons” in 1992 and ’93. The voice-over performance honor is one of three Primetime Emmy Award categories that are so-called juried awards, which have no nominations and final winners are determined by a panel of judges with relevant expertise. The juried awards will be formally presented to the winners along with the rest of the Creative Arts Primetime Emmy categories Sept. 12 at a ceremony held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. The major Emmys will be handed out in a televised ceremony a week later. Congratulations Dan!

No Bread Rolls For Dan

What? It seems it doesn’t take much for IrelandOnline to consider something as news. Nevertheless, this particular piece made me laugh. “The Simpsons may look the same on screen after almost 18 years but the cast behind the famous voices have been piling pounds onto their waists as well as into their pockets. Now a Springfield source has revealed that bread rolls are being banned from Simpsons table readings. This is because most of the cast have signed on to the Zone Diet to try and shift some weight.” If you ask me, the payrise isn’t worth it if they’re not delivering bread to the table. Homer’s Voice Hits High Note

Dan Castellaneta, voice of Homer Simpson, has been cast as Aaron Spelling in NBC’s movie about Charlie’s Angels, one of Spelling’s best-known creations. For the part, Castellaneta will don Spelling’s signature turtleneck for “Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of ‘Charlie’s Angels’ ” – the show dubbed “jiggle TV” by critics during its mid-’70s run. The movie will focus on the show’s tumultuous first season, and is slated to air sometime next year. The ABC series followed the adventures of three sexy private detectives who worked for an unseen boss named Charlie. Critics derided Charlie’s Angels as “massage parlor television” and “voyeurism” which only added to the show’s huge ratings and turned its stars into sex symbols.

Their Weekender section talks to him about his past at the University and briefly touches on the show. But in a separate article he talks Season 15. Spoilers follow: “Homer and Bart make a battling robot. Marge and Homer talk about their past romances. Homer becomes an avenging super hero. Bart goes to juvenile detention. At 45, Castellaneta is the same age as Homer, but that’s where the similarities end. Castellaneta is a shy introvert, the kind of guy who could never muster the courage to return an item to the store. He was destined to be an art teacher; in fact, he was student teaching and occasionally entertained his students by slipping into funny voices.

“One kid goes, ‘What are you doing here, man? You should be in Hollywood.’ I thought, ‘That kid’s got something.’ I decided rather than get ensconced in teaching and maybe wish I’d tried acting, I said, ‘I’ll do it now while I’m young, and if it doesn’t work out I’ll still have a chance to go do something else,’” says Castellaneta.
