Viewers old and new were treated to a rare brief history of the show, through the words of its producers, writers, stars, and guest stars, and were even treated briefly to what the show promised in the first place — ice skating! 13.46 million viewers tuned in to the first half hour of the special, and 11.171 million stayed watching for the second half. These are preliminary figures which will be amended come later in the week.

The special boosted weekly viewership of The Cleveland Show, which ended up with 8.55 million viewers.

The show helped Fox win the night in all major demographics

Fox have released a promotional image for Sunday January 10th’s premiere of “Once Upon a Time in Springfield”, the milestone 450th episode of The Simpsons.

Krusty the Clown is forced to hire an actress named Princess Penelope for The Krusty the Clown Show to generate more young, female viewers. Krusty and Princess Penelope end up in a relationship.

Anne Hathaway will guest star in the episode as Princess Penelope. Krusty’s father Hyman Krustofski will also appear, and Jackie Mason will return to voice him. Eartha Kitt also recorded a role before her death in December 2008.

Note: The Simpsons will return from it’s mid-season break on January 3rd with the episode “Thursdays with Abie”:

Grampa is sitting on a bench waiting for his family when a thoughtful-looking man named Marshall Goldman approaches him and asks to hear about his life. Grampa tells Goldman about the time he was on a World War II battleship, which was hit by an enemy torpedo, and Goldman, a human-interest columnist, publishes it in The Springfield Shopper. Later, Grampa meets Mitch Albom (guest-voicing as himself) and shares another story with Goldman for a follow-up article. Homer becomes jealous of Grampa’s newfound fame and seeks a surrogate father. But when Homer discovers a draft of Goldman’s third story, he must race to find Grampa before it is published and his life is changed forever.

The app is described as the following:

Watch “The Simpsons” characters come alive on your desktop. Join your friends in downloading the app and sending virtual pranks to each others’ computers. Gain levels and win trophies in your quest to create the most digital havoc.

Fox has ordered two more seasons of The Simpsons that will make the animated hit the longest-running series in primetime TV history. The 44-episode pickup will bring the show to a whopping 493 episodes.

“Gunsmoke” has held the record as the longest-running series and was on the air for 20 years. “The Simpsons” and NBC’s “Law & Order” have been closing in on the Western classic, with Fox’s comedy tying “Gunsmoke” this year and “Order” currently airing its 19th season. With this renewal, “The Simpsons” will easily take the lead. And with NBC shedding its 10 p.m. hour and the “L&O” flagship pulling modest numbers, the chances of the crime drama outlasting “The Simpsons” seems unlikely.

The “Simpsons” pickup came after 20th TV closed a new deal with James L. Brooks’ company Gracie Films on Wednesday. The voice cast was already secured for two more years as part of their most recent contract negotiations.

That honour actually belongs to “The Strong Arms Of The Ma,” which aired on Feb 2. It’s difficult to find a straight answer why milestone status has been bestowed on tonight’s episode. Some say that the 300 figure doesn’t account for two early holiday specials, while Fox maintains that there was some discrepancy between the original, scheduled broadcast date and the number of episodes that were eventually aired leading up to it. Conspiracy theories abound in online Simpsons discussion groups as to why this is so.

At one point in tonight’s episode, Marge remarks to Lisa: “I can’t count the number of times (Homer) has done something crazy like this.” Lisa responds with 300. “Hmm,” says Marge. “I could have sworn it’s been 302.” Read More >>>

After all, it’s only a cartoon, right? But no, a jokey tribute wouldn’t do justice to The Simpsons, which is — how to phrase this with the proper amount of gravitas? — the best television series ever made. Period.” Read More >>>

The Simpsons airs its 300th episode, a powerful rebuttal to the plague of nightmarish reality shows which are collectively leading some to believe the future for scripted programming is dim. It’s too bad, then, that episode 300 is not a great one (opinionated spoilers follow).

In it, Bart discovers, on an old videotape, that he starred in a commercial as a baby. When he finds out the money’s gone, he sues his parents for emancipation. Lampooned are Furbies, homemade conjugal videotapes, medical-product ads, pro skateboarding, courtroom TV, the Kennedy Center Honors, Simpsons merchandising, Michael Jackson’s baby handling and more. It’s even got, in an apparent homage to the beginnings of The Simpsons, dad Homer being a lot cruder than he has become, trading attempted asphyxiations with son Bart. But it’s also mucked up by too many lines going to the celebrity guest star (Tony Hawk), the series’ biggest ongoing weakness. And there is a forced, rushed resolution to Bart’s decision to move out and into a downtown loft.” Read More >>>
