Today’s the day when Season 20 is released on DVD and Blu-Ray, bypassing the natural order of the release of seasons 13 – 19. Normally in these updates we detail all the special features contained in said shiny new release. Not this time. Not because I’m a jerk. But because Fox decided not to include any this time. So what am I to fill the rest of the post with? How about:

Ten Reasons To NOT Buy This Set:

Despite usually being a talking point for Matt Groening in his DVD introductions, this set does not have a commentary for every single episode. How many commentaries do you get, I hear you ask? Zero. Big. Fat. Zero. What’s Matt Groening got to say about that in his intro? Oh yeah that’s right — he isn’t given one on this set.

Okay I lied, you get one special feature. A sneak peek of the 20th Anniversary Special. In 3D! On Ice! What’s that, you watched the entire thing last night? You and 13 million other people who now have no reason to own this ‘complete set’!

Despite them being readily accessible due to the time since these episodes were produced, no deleted scenes have been included on this set. No deleted scenes! What they kept in must have been pure gold!

You watched these episodes already in the last twelve months. Were they really that great that you must see them all again, today? Over Season 13?

Free cast poster! If you’re lucky. Some have already reported that their set has omitted this bonus feature.

The cover does not match the rest of the series at all.

The Blu-Ray version does not contain a booklet detailing the episodes. Just a one-page slip with the episode titles on it. Handy, considering you paid more for this set!

The discs are contained within everybody’s favorite drink-coaster creator — the same cardboard packaging used in Seasons 11 and 12. Why purchase your drink coasters when you can instantly turn your Simpsons DVDs into instant scratch-heavy coasters simply by inserting and removing your discs from the box for general usage!

The disc menus are a plain black screen with single-color line-drawings. Further emphasizing that Fox rushed this release out to make a quick buck, without a care in the world about what true fans want out of a season release.

The *proper* release in 2014 will have everything it was supposed to have.

You can purchase this box set at Amazon or any good retailer, but remember you’re only purchasing it for the episodes in Season 20, which wont cost you a cent if you download them.

The Simpsons made its series debut in the Winter of 1989, making it 20 years old this December. The series was renewed by Fox this year for a further 2 seasons, which will make it the ripe old age of 23 in 2012.

No, that is not a typo. While Season Twelve of The Simpsons was released last month, it appears that Fox are keen to go back to a two-per-year release plan by rushing a release of The Complete Twentieth Season, possibly in time for Christmas 2009. This news was first rumoured by TVShowsOnDVD yesterday when they discovered Amazon had added pre-order information for the show on both DVD and Blu-ray format. The show has been broadcast in high definition since the middle of Season 20, allowing for Fox to cash in on Blu-Ray sales, but instead of waiting til 2016 for Season 20 to come around, it seems likely that from now on an older season as well as the previously aired season will be released every year.

So is it just a rumour? That seems not to be the case after a KFC promotion for The Simpsons Ride is giving away the Twentieth Season DVD as runner up prizes. And when is that contest drawn? November 2009. So it seems as if Fox have been keeping this one under their hats, but a Christmas release is almost certain. We’ll give you more details as soon as we ‘re told!

The previous all-time low belonged to March episode ‘Lisa The Drama Queen’, which had 5.75 million viewers, so not only is it a new record, it has taken a giant beating by its own weakest episode. With such a big gap, last night’s episode is sure to remain the lowest figures for quite a while, but we’ve been surprised before. All five of the least watched episodes have now come in this, the 20th Anniversary year.

Family Guy had 6.47 million viewers at 9:00, keeping it as the number one performer for Fox on Sunday nights. King Of The Hill had 4.10 million viewers and American Dad 4.95 million, which, compared to The Simpsons at 8:00 in a more accessible timeslot is actually impressive.

Low ratings have been blamed on lots of things before, but there’s no question about it: people do not like these ‘storytelling’ episodes. They alienate the casual Simpsons viewer, who are likely to turn off or just not tune in to begin with if the stories do not interest them. Even I did not want to watch it, but for the purposes of this website I forced myself to. The show would be doing itself a favor in dropping these episodes entirely and having the season cut short one episode.

Rate the episode below, and try not to give it an ‘excellent’ grade just because Simpsons R da kewlest.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

We’re also running an additional poll this week, where you can have your say on these types of episodes.
